Aaron Murrey: Making the most of it

In November 2016, Saints Foundation took on five Funded Projects Apprentices to help contribute to the ever-increasing work we do in our local community.

Aaron Murrey, 21, found his way onto the apprenticeship programme after trying his hand at various different job roles.

“Before this apprenticeship I had a few different jobs,” he reflects. “I’d been a barman, chef, groundsman at my local cricket club, and I was also training for the Army from 2012-2014 before I had to leave for medical reasons.”

Aaron is one of five apprentices who work across the Foundation’s Funded Projects; on a weekly basis they help deliver on programmes ranging from Generation Gains to Saints Kicks.

“Since joining the Foundation I’ve learnt a great deal,” Aaron says. “I’ve learnt new coaching styles and techniques, as well as how to apply these to a wide variety of participants.”

“The most rewarding work I’ve done is working on the SaintsAbility programme, where I’ve had the chance to coach sports such as football, dodge ball and tennis to people with disabilities.”

As well as being valuable members of the Foundation’s workforce, the two-year apprenticeship, funded by Zurich Community Trust, is also a great opportunity for Aaron and his peers to learn new skills and apply them to a future career.

“I’ve definitely become a lot more career focused since coming here, I’m fully focused on what I want to do and that’s because I’ve found something to do which I enjoy.”

“This opportunity has been amazing for me. As well as working on all the different programmes that the Foundation run in the community, I’ve also been able to do complete my Level 2 Health & Fitness qualification to further enhance how I can help deliver sessions, as well as being chosen to represent the Foundation at an awards ceremony in London,” Aaron comments.

“Things like this show that this apprenticeship isn’t just a great job, it’s a great opportunity that I’m fully taking advantage of.”
