Marching Towards Employment
As part of the Saints4Ability project, Saints Foundation runs a 16+ programme that supports people with disabilities by teaching them key skills, and therefore improving chances of getting them into employment.
The 12-week course is split into two main segments; the first six-week block is a Sports Leadership Level 1 qualification. This teaches participants the basic elements of coaching, including designing and delivering a sports session.
The course is specifically designed to improve communication, a skill which will benefit participants when in employment.
The latter half of the programme is a six-week employability course led by CDG Wiseability, which includes six two-hour workshops covering interview skills, presentations and ‘what employers want’, as well as a two-hour beginners skiing lesson which is designed to improve confidence in participants.
100% of those who have participated in Marching Towards Employment have self-reported an improvement in their confidence and communication skills when it comes to employment scenarios, and 25% of those who have completed the programme have gone into employment.
12 weeks ago I wouldn’t have been able to speak in front of a group, but today I have delivered a presentation about Southampton FC. This course has given me the confidence to speak to new people” – Connor Newcombe, Marching To Employment participant
Saints Foundation’s next Marching Towards Employment programme starts on January 19th 2018, and runs until March 2018.
