David Sheehy: From Primary Stars to future Saint
Every young football fan dreams of one day representing their childhood Club, but thanks to Saints Foundation, that dream might come true for David…
The Premier League Primary Stars programme covers a wide variety of themes in the schools where it is delivered, from PSHE, Numeracy and Literacy provisions to best-in-class PE delivery.
One of the key benefits of the programme, however, is creating links between primary schools, local communities, and professional football clubs.
For David Sheehy, 11, the bond created between Bassett Green Primary School and Southampton Football Club is helping him start to realise his dreams.
“It’s really inspiring having someone from Southampton Football Club working in my school every week,” David says. “I get to take part in Mr Kilby’s after school clubs and have played in special Saints Primary Stars football tournaments.”
Through his involvement with Saints Foundation’s Primary Stars programme, David has been a direct beneficiary of the link between his school and a Premier League football club.
“Having a Primary Stars coach who also worked at the Saints Academy really helped me, he had seen me play football at school and told the Club about me.”
After hearing about David, scouts from Southampton Football Club watched him playing for his local team, and he was asked to go on trial at the Club.
“The experiences I’ve had since joining the Academy have been amazing.”
“I’ve played games against Bayern Munich and Juventus, and my age group have also qualified for the National Futsal Finals in Birmingham.”
As well as providing support for pupils, and assisting in the delivery of PSHE, Literacy and Numeracy, our Primary Stars staff are always trying to identify potential talent through events, to ensure that their participants will always have the opportunity to showcase their ability, and make the most of their schools connection with the Club.
David’s transition from Primary Stars to Saints Academy ties in with Saints Foundation’s mission to change the lives and fulfil the potential of everyone it works with.
“If we didn’t have Primary Stars in my school I might never have got the chance to play for Southampton Football Club.”
“I want to carry on playing football as much as I can, and hopefully one day I’ll sign a professional contract with Southampton, which would be a dream come true.”
