Local MP visits Reading With Saints programme
Saints Foundation’s Reading With Saints programme received a special visit yesterday, with Royston Smith MP, dropping into the session at Oasis Academy Mayfield.
The programme – which was developed in conjunction with Royston, who is Member of Parliament for Southampton Itchen – aims to develop the reading skills of primary school boys, providing them with eight mentoring sessions a term with different activities to support their learning.
The session delivered at Oasis Academy Mayfield was attended by four Year 6 boys from Valentine Primary and over the eight weeks of Reading With Saints they have demonstrated increasing confidence and improved reading ability.
Royston said: “I really enjoyed joining Reading With Saints to see the group in action. It was excellent to see how engaged the boys were and how enthusiastic they have become about reading”.
“In recent years it has occurred to me that when I was young, I never had someone to help with my reading. Because of this I approached Saints Foundation to see if they could deliver sessions to support young boys with their reading.”
“Programmes like this are invaluable. Many problems in life can stem from not being able to read very well and through my work it has become apparent that young boys in particular are struggling to become accomplished readers. Opportunities like this make reading more interesting and relevant for young boys and it would be great to see this extended to other schools”.
